Review: X-tinction Agenda 1 & 2

Being the X-geek that I am I had to pick up X-tinction Agenda from the Secret Wars event. The title is set in the X-topic domain of BATTLEWORLD and is overseen by Baron Grey (Rachel Grey aka Phoenix). Because it's a four issue auction-packed miniseries it has to stuff a whole lot in each issue; so my receive only gives the basics:

X-tinction Agenda #1

The first issue kicks off with the final battle for Genosha that left Havok and Rahne as new leaders in this country. It fast forwards to years later when the country is plagued by an extinction virus causing them to be quarantined and cut off from the rest of X-topia. There are food riots and the only thing Havoks team is left to do is have Mystique pose as Xavier (who is no dead) to quell them.

The Genoshan leaders plead with both Lord Emperor doom AND Baron Grey but to know avail. The Genoshans believe the with the help of mutant healer Triage and Rogue, under the advice of their gene engineer, could help them stop the plague. Under the advice of Beast, Baron Grey refuses to lift the quarantine.

With no indication of getting any relief the Genoshans, at their wit's end, decide to invade X-topia and take what they've been asking for: Triage and Rogue.

What I liked? : I like that is IS action packed -- as promised. The series also features several mutants and there's a lot of display of powers and fighting etc etc-- and we know I'm all about team mutants. I liked that the Phoenix was Rachel and not Jean.

Dislikes?: The story is a bit overpacked. It follows several mutants and side-stories and subplots. These other little character side stories leave a lot to be desired.

The issue also moves a little quicker than I'd like (but they have no choice it's a four-issue series). Also it was a bit confusing at first and not as easy to delve into until I read the introductory page (which I usually skip in most comics) and cleared a few things up for me.

I give it a 6/10

X-tinction Agenda #2

The series picks up and gets better for me by this issue. It's a ****load of battle that really pulls you in as the Genoshan team carries out their well thought out mission into X-topia.

To make a long story short they have key players being Xi'an and Mystique.  Mystique poses as Dr. Cecelia Reyes and when Havok apparently critically injured Kitty in battle night crawler takes Kitty to her she asks Kurt to get Triage to save her.

Meanwhile, Xi'an takes over the minds of Rogue and Tempest (among others) in order to defeat the X-men and take the hostages.

We so get into a glimpse of the subplot that is beast bringing dead teammates to life by time travel and the concerns he has caused Baron Grey because cause of this. Rachel is also not particularly pleased by the outcome of events either because she wasn't 100% for the quarantine and now, because if it, she is forced to go to war with her former friends.

The issue wraps up with them taking Triage to the gene engineer who is to run some "tests" on him. Unbeknownst to them, this man has no intention of using triage to cure the plague but instead to resurrect their old foe.

What I liked ?: It was a pretty good action-packed issue. There's still much more happening in this issue than I can talk about. I also get a glimpsed of a lot of the mutants I've missed over the years and see them in action again.

I also liked this scene:

Disliked?: The story is still just a tad over packed.

I give it a 7.5/10
